Translation
The son of Śrutāyu was Vasumān; the son of Satyāyu, Śrutañjaya; the son of Raya, Eka; the son of Jaya, Amita; and the son of Vijaya, Bhīma. The son of Bhīma was Kāñcana; the son of Kāñcana was Hotraka; and the son of Hotraka was Jahnu, who drank all the water of the Ganges in one sip.
Āyu’s prolific dynasty will be discussed later. First the dynasties of the others among the six sons are described in summary starting with Śrutāyu. Raya had a son called Eka. Jaya’s son was Amita.
Personal Guidance
Each son becomes a father; the line travels until Jahnu drinks all of Ganges in one sip. Occasionally, in a long anonymous list, a startling personality emerges — and we should not skim past the sentence where they appear.
Reflection Questions
- What 'one-sip-of-Ganges' figure am I overlooking in my own family lineage?
- Where am I treating sacred history as repetitive when it actually contains hidden astonishments?
