Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
After thus giving everything in charity to the brāhmaṇas, Rāmacandra retained only his personal garments and ornaments, and similarly the Queen, mother Sītā, was left with only her nose ring and nothing else. Rāma gave away all ornaments and clothing except what he was wearing, whereas Sītā gave away even the ornaments she was wearing. Only her nose ornament and bracelet remained.
Rāma keeps only His clothes and ornaments; Sītā only her nose ring. After giving everything in charity, the royal couple stands in voluntary simplicity — the model of opulence rightly disposed of.
Reflection Questions
  • What single ornament could I keep if I dispersed everything else for the right cause?
  • Where does my present standard of living betray a fear of becoming Rāma-and-Sītā simple?
