Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: O King, when Bali Mahārāja lost all his opulence and died in the fight, Śukrācārya, a descendant of Bhṛgu Muni, brought him back to life. Because of this, the great soul Bali Mahārāja became a disciple of Śukrācārya and began to serve him with great faith, offering everything he had.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: O King! When Bali Mahārāja lost all his wealth and became unconscious, Śukrācārya, a descendant of Bhṛgu, brought him back to life. Because of this, the great soul Bali Mahārāja became a disciple of Śukrācārya and began to serve him with great faith, offering to him everything he had. Bali lost his wealth in the fight with the devatās, and his life airs abandoned him (hāpitaḥ).
Bali lost everything and died; Śukrācārya revived him by mantra. Bali, in gratitude, became his disciple and offered everything. Receiving life from a teacher creates the deepest discipleship — total offering follows total revival.
Reflection Questions
  • Whose 'revival mantra' has worked on me, and have I responded with the discipleship that calls for?
  • Where do I take a teacher's restoration for granted instead of letting it bind me in service?
