No one anywhere can counteract this military arrangement of Bali’s. It now appears that Bali is trying to drink up the entire universe with his mouth, lick up the ten directions with his tongue, and raise fire in every direction with his eyes. Indeed, he has arisen like the annihilating fire known as saṁvartaka.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
No one anywhere can counteract Bali, since he seems to be devouring the universe with his mouth, licking it up, and burning all direction with his glance. It is as if the fire of final destruction has arisen. Pratiboḍhum means “to counteract with troops.” This is because he seems to be devouring the universe.
Bali seems to drink the universe with his mouth, lick directions with his tongue, raise fire with his eyes — like saṁvartaka fire. Indra's vivid metaphor admits something cosmic is happening. Naming threats accurately is the start of dharmic response.
Reflection Questions
  • What threat in my life have I described too mildly, hiding its actual size from myself?
  • Where could vivid metaphor help me face what flat language has let me ignore?
