O King, a fierce battle on the beach of the Ocean of Milk ensued between the demigods and the demons. The fighting was so terrible that simply hearing about it would make the hair on one’s body stand on end.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
O King! A fierce, hair-raising battle took place on the beach of the ocean of milk between the devas and the demons. The verb “took place” should be supplied.
On the beach of the Ocean of Milk, a battle so fierce that hearing it makes hair stand on end. The Bhāgavatam does not soften conflict. The same place that produced nectar now produces blood — sacred geographies hold both.
Reflection Questions
  • Where in my own life does the very site of past blessing now feel like a battleground?
  • Can I hold a sacred place's complex history without forgetting either its joy or its struggle?
