O King.
O King, Hiraṇyakaśipu was extremely angry, but since he was a great politician, he knew how to act according to the time and situation. With sweet words he began pacifying his nephews, whose names were Śakuni, Śambara, Dhṛṣṭi, Bhūtasantāpana, Vṛka, Kālanābha, Mahānābha, Hariśmaśru and Utkaca. He also consoled their mother, his sister-in-law, Ruṣābhānu, as well as his own mother, Diti. He spoke to them all as follows.
Gauḍīya Ācāryas
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura
Gauḍīya
Translation
O King! Hiraṇyakaśipu, judging time and place, with sweet words spoke to his nephews, whose names were Śakuni, Śambara, Dhṛṣṭi, Bhūtasantāpana, Vṛka, Kālanābha, Mahānābha, Hariśmaśru and Utkaca, and to their mother, Ruṣābhānu, and as well as to his own mother, Diti.

Personal Guidance
Furious yet politically shrewd, Hiraṇyakaśipu pacifies his nephews, sister-in-law, and mother with sweet words. The demonic can be eloquent and gentle when strategy demands it. Charm is not the same as character.
Reflection Questions
- Whose charm in your life have you mistaken for character?
- Where do you deploy sweet words to manage others instead of speaking honestly?
