After performing the ritualistic observances for the death of his brother, Hiraṇyakaśipu, being extremely unhappy, tried to pacify his nephews.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
After performing the death rites of his brother, grieving Hiraṇyakaśipu consoled his nephews. Kaṭodakam means water given to the Pretas. The word ādi indicates the performance of preta-śrāddha rites as well.
After the funeral rites, Hiraṇyakaśipu — still grieving — tries to comfort his nephews. Even the demonic feel familial tenderness. The capacity to console others remains even in those most hardened by the world.
Reflection Questions
  • Whom have you written off as too hardened to feel real tenderness?
  • Where does your own anger coexist with care, and how do you honor both?
