The demons could see the calf and cow, but because of the illusion created by the energy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the demons could not forbid them. The great mystic Maya Dānava became aware that the calf and cow were drinking the nectar, and he could understand this to be the unseen power of providence. Thus he spoke to the demons, who were grievously lamenting.

Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura
Gauḍīya
Translation
Though the demons saw the calf and cow, because of bewilderment, they did not stop them. Knowing this, the great mystic Maya Dānava, surprised but not lamenting, and understanding the will of fate, spoke to the demons guarding the nectar, who were lamenting.
Personal Guidance
Demons see the calf and cow but cannot stop them — illusion from the Lord's energy. Maya Dānava recognizes the unseen hand of providence and addresses the grieving demons. Even the master illusionist acknowledges providence when it appears.
Reflection Questions
- Where could you recognize the unseen hand of providence in a defeat you have suffered?
- How does naming providence sometimes shift defeat into instruction?
