should become.
One should understand that the activities of persons who are proud of their material experience bring only results contradictory to those such persons conceive while awake, sleeping and deeply sleeping. One should further understand that the spirit soul, although very difficult for the materialist to perceive, is above all these conditions, and by the strength of one’s discrimination, one should give up the desire for fruitive results in the present life and in the next. Thus becoming experienced in transcendental knowledge, one should become My devotee.
Gauḍīya Ācāryas
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura
Gauḍīya
Translation
Understanding the attainment of opposite results for persons doing karma, and understanding the subtle state of spiritual realization beyond the states of waking, sleeping and deep sleep, freeing oneself from all sense objects seen and heard, and being satisfied with scriptural knowledge and realization by one’s sādhana, one should become my devotee.
Sthāna-traya-vilakṣaṇām means the fourth state of spiritual realization. Mātrābhiḥ means “from sense objects.” Sva-tejasā means “by ones sādhana.”
Personal Guidance
Activities by those proud of material experience produce contradictory results in waking, dream, and deep sleep; recognize the underlying mistake. The full three-state analysis reveals the structural error.
Reflection Questions
- Where do my waking, dream, and sleep states show the same contradictory result?
- What underlying mistake would touching all three reveal?
