Vīrabhadra immediately caught Bhaga, who had been moving his eyebrows during Bhṛgu’s cursing of Lord Śiva, and out of great anger thrust him to the ground and forcibly put out his eyes.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Vīrabhadra pulled out the eyes of Bhaga, who had fallen on the ground, and who had encouraged Dakṣa by the movement of his eyebrows in the assembly. Śapantam refers to Dakṣa who criticized Śiva. Bhaga encouraged Ḍakṣa by glancing with the corner of his eye.
Bhaga had raised his eyebrows in approval of Bhṛgu's curse — silent gestures of agreement with offense are counted. Don't imagine that wordless complicity is innocent. Your eyebrows speak too.
Reflection Questions
  • What wordless approvals of offense have I given that I haven't accounted for?
  • Where do my gestures express what I would never put in words?
