After receiving the sage’s attention, the King sat down and was silent. Recalling the instructions of the Lord, Kardama then spoke to the King as follows, delighting him with his sweet accents.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
After worship, when Manu was seated silently, Kardama, remembering the words of the Lord, began to speak sweet words, to invoke his pleasure. After washing his feet, he sat on a seat of kuśa grass and received flowers, sandalwood, dūrva grass and fruits. He remained silent (saṁyatam).
The king sits quietly after Kardama's attention. Kardama then recalls the Lord's instructions and speaks delightfully. The best counsel is grounded in remembered direction, not improvised eloquence.
Reflection Questions
  • When I'm about to speak important counsel, do I first recall the Lord's instructions?
  • Whose silence am I currently failing to fill with words sourced from divine memory?
