hariḥ
the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
Desiring to bestow His mercy upon the saintly Mārkaṇḍeya, who had perfectly fixed his mind in self-realization through penance, Vedic study and observance of regulative principles, the Supreme Personality of Godhead personally appeared before the sage in the forms of Nara and Nārāyaṇa.

Translation
While Mārkaṇḍeya was fixing his mind through penance, Vedic study and observance of regulative principles, the Supreme Lord Nara-Nārāyaṇa appeared before the sage by his mercy.
Personal Guidance
Desiring to bestow mercy on Markandeya, the Lord Himself decides to appear. Sincere austerity ultimately draws not just attention but personal visit. The Lord doesn't merely send messengers to those who persist.
Reflection Questions
- Am I willing to persist long enough that the Lord notices personally?
- Where does my impatience cut the practice short of His visit?
