The sun in its annihilating form will drink up with its terrible rays all the water of the ocean, of living bodies and of the earth itself. But the devastating sun will not give any rain in return.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
The sun in its annihilating form will drink up with its terrible rays all the water of the ocean, of living bodies and of the earth itself. But the devastating sun will not give anything back. Pibati means “it draws up.”
The annihilating sun drinks every drop of moisture and gives nothing back. There comes a stage when even nature's reciprocity ceases. The verse leaves us with a sober reminder that material abundance is borrowed, never owned.
Reflection Questions
  • Which abundance in my life do I take as a permanent right rather than a gift?
  • How can gratitude reshape my relationship to what I currently have?
