In Dvāpara-yuga the religious qualities of austerity, truth, mercy and charity are reduced to one half by their irreligious counterparts — dissatisfaction, untruth, violence and enmity.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
In Dvāpara-yuga, the religious qualities of austerity, truth, mercy and cleanliness are reduced to one half by their irreligious counterparts—dissatisfaction, untruth, violence and enmity. The list of adharmas starting with violence is not in the same order as the qualities of religion mentioned in the first line.
By Dvāpara, dharma is halved by its opposites. The downward slope is real, but every age also offers a way out — and in Dvāpara, that way was direct worship of Kṛṣṇa's lotus feet. Recognizing the slope, we lean against it instead of with it.
Reflection Questions
  • Where am I leaning 'with' the cultural slope rather than against it?
  • What spiritual posture would lean back?
