The vānaprastha should not groom the hair on his head, body or face, should not manicure his nails, should not pass stool and urine at irregular times and should not make a special endeavor for dental hygiene. He should be content to take bath in water three times daily and should sleep on the ground.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
The vānaprastha should not cut the hair on his head, body or face, should not manicure his nails, should not pass stool and urine at irregular times, and should not clean his teeth. He should bathe in water three times daily and should sleep on the ground. He should not clean his teeth. Three times a day he should submerge himself in water like a pestle (dunking and not scrubbing).
Don't groom hair or nails, take baths three times daily, sleep on the ground — clean but unstyled. Bodily care continues but ornamentation ends.
Reflection Questions
  • How much of my daily grooming serves health vs. self-image?
  • What would shifting that ratio do?
