Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.85.40
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
duṣprāpam
—
difficult to attain
Compound: duṣ (difficult) + prāpa (attaining). The standard śāstric word for the rarity of darśana of Bhagavān. The same root reappears in adurlabham, the verse's paradox.
-
adurlabham
—
not difficult to obtain
Negation of durlabha — 'not hard to find'. The paradox: difficult by śāstra-norms, easy by Bhagavān's mercy. Gauḍīyas: kṛpā collapses the entire qualification-hierarchy.
-
rajaḥ-tamaḥ-svabhāvānām
—
of those whose nature is passion and ignorance
Compound: rajaḥ + tamaḥ + svabhāva (nature). Bali frankly classifies himself and his kind. He does not claim sāttvika qualification; the mercy he receives is independent of guṇa-rank.
-
yadṛcchayā
—
by Your own sweet will
Instrumental of yadṛcchā ('whatever-may-be'). The cause of darśana is not Bali's qualification but Bhagavān's spontaneous wish. Gauḍīyas: hari-kṛpā is causeless — ahaitukī.
By ascribing to himself the degraded status of a demoniac birth, Bali Mahārāja denied any spiritual qualification for being visited by Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma. What to speak of demons like himself, Bali thought, even advanced renunciants on the paths of jñāna and yoga fail to please the Lord when they do not give up their pride and envy.
Seeing you two, which is hard to attain has become easily attained (adurlabham), for us asuras, whose nature is raja and tama, because it has been attained by itself (not by our effort).
Hi means certainly. Ca also means api. Thus the verse “Certainly seeing you two is difficult to achieve but also not difficult to achieve when, by your will, you accept to see us.”
Hi means certainly. Ca also means api. Thus the verse “Certainly seeing you two is difficult to achieve but also not difficult to achieve when, by your will, you consent to see us.” Or previously you were difficult to attain, but now easy to attain, since you are more merciful than before, manifesting unlimited powers.
- What recent glimpse of God did I treat as ordinary that I should have treated as rare?
- How might gratitude for occasional sight steady me through long ordinary stretches?
The lower the soil, the more grateful for rain. Bali confesses: 'We who are made of rajas and tamas should not be the ones seeing You — yet here You are.' Mercy moves downward most generously, and the daitya-king receives what the deva often misses.
