  • ārya — O respectable one
Vocative of ārya — noble, elder. Kuntī addresses Vasudeva with full respect even while complaining. Gauḍīyas note: bhakti-shaped grievance is never disrespect; the form holds while the heart speaks.
  • akṛta-āśiṣam — whose desires were unfulfilled
Compound: a (not) + kṛta (made, fulfilled) + āśiṣam (blessings, accusative). Her āśīrvāda from family relations never landed. The honest naming of unfulfillment is itself a Vaiṣṇava virtue — Bhagavān prefers a transparent heart to a pretending one.
  • sat-tamāḥ — most saintly
Compound: sat (true, real, holy) + tamāḥ (superlative). Even while complaining, Kuntī affirms her brothers' sainthood. Gauḍīya bhakti holds two truths at once: 'you wronged me' and 'you are holy' — without collapsing either.
  • āpatsu — in times of danger
Locative plural of āpad — calamity. Kuntī's life was āpat-bahula. This same word becomes the keyword of her prayer in SB 1.8 — vipadaḥ santu — where she asks for more such calamities because they bring kṛṣṇa-smaraṇa.
Queen Kuntī said: My dear, respectable brother, I feel that my desires have been frustrated, because although all of you are most saintly, you forgot me during my calamities.

Here Queen Kuntī addresses her brother Vasudeva.

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Queen Kuntī said: My dear, respectable brother, I feel that my desires have been frustrated, because although all of you are most saintly, you forgot me during my calamities.
Commentary

"I think myself devoid of pious acts, since you, though so proper in conduct, did not remember me when I was in difficulty. It was my bad fortune. It was not your fault."

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

She addresses Vasudeva since he is superior to others. O elder (ārya)! Since he is elder he should have protected her. She addresses him as brother to produce affection in him. Or ārya-bhrātar can be taken together. O elder brother! I am unfortunate since you did not remember me during my calamities though you are most respectable. Because of being respectable, he should have been affectionate to friends in a suffering condition.

Kuntī said to Vasudeva: 'You are most saintly, but you forgot me during my calamities.' Honesty about hurt can be expressed even toward those we deeply respect; love and complaint coexist.
Reflection Questions
  • What hurt about someone I respect have I never voiced?
  • How could honest naming, without blame, deepen rather than wound the relationship?

A child kept indoors too long while siblings play outside does not seek explanation, only the truth: 'You forgot me.' Kuntī's complaint to Vasudeva is not bitterness — it is the bhakta's right to speak her grief plainly to those she loves.
