Important Words
-
protphulla-hṛt-vaktra-saroruha-śriyaḥ
—
whose hearts and faces had the beauty of fully blooming lotuses
Long compound: protphulla (fully blooming) + hṛt (heart) + vaktra (face) + saroruha (lotus) + śriyaḥ (beauty). The Bhāgavatam's signature bahuvrīhi style. Both the inner hṛdaya-padma and the outer mukha-padma bloom together — bhāva is never merely internal.
-
harṣa-raṁhasā
—
by the impulse of joy
Compound: harṣa (joy) + raṁhasā (instrumental of raṁhas, force, speed). Joy here has momentum — it propels bodies into embrace. Gauḍīyas note: bhāva that does not move the body is suspect; sāttvika-bhāvas always show outwardly.
-
hṛṣyat-tvacaḥ
—
whose skin erupted in horripilation
Compound: hṛṣyat (thrilling) + tvacaḥ (skin). Romāñca — hair standing on end — is one of the eight sāttvika-bhāvas catalogued in Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu 2.3. Visible bodily signs of prema, not merely felt emotion.
-
ruddha-giraḥ
—
whose speech was choked
Compound: ruddha (obstructed) + giraḥ (speech). Vaivarṇya (loss of voice) and gadgada (choking) — two more sāttvika-bhāvas. The reunion verse showcases prema's physiology. Mahāprabhu's biographies record the same signs in him.
-
mudam
—
delight
Accusative of mud — joy specifically tied to union, in contrast to harṣa (sudden joy) or ānanda (settled bliss). The Gauḍīya rasa-vocabulary distinguishes these with care.
As the great joy of seeing one another made the lotuses of their hearts and faces bloom with fresh beauty, the men embraced one another enthusiastically. With tears pouring from their eyes, the hair on their bodies standing on end and their voices choked up, they all felt intense bliss.

Translation
As the great joy of seeing one another made the lotuses of their hearts and faces bloom with fresh beauty, the men embraced one another enthusiastically. With tears pouring from their eyes, the hair on their bodies standing on end and their voices choked up, they all felt intense bliss.

Commentary
First a general description of the happiness of all the male devotees meeting is given. Because of the force of joy on directly meeting each other, their hearts, hands, faces and forms became beautiful like fully blooming lotuses and they embraced each other deeply. They felt great joy. Their bliss was manifest in more and more intense degrees-- first in tears, then in hairs standing on end and finally by choked voices.

Personal Guidance
Men embraced with tears pouring, hair standing on end, voices choked. Devotional reunions allow full bodily ecstasy; we do not have to be composed when love returns to us.
Reflection Questions
- When was the last time I let myself be physically overcome by love?
- What in me resists that surrender?
Analogy
Lotus buds remain closed in the night of separation; sunrise unfurls them all at once. The men's faces, long held tight by years of vipralambha, bloom open the moment they see one another at Kurukṣetra.
