Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.8.7
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
ācāryaḥ
—
the priestly guide
From ā-√car — 'one whose conduct (ācāra) is to be followed', and who establishes (ā-cinoti) the disciple in proper learning. Garga's ācārya-title is the very identity he must here keep quiet — because the title itself would betray Kṛṣṇa to Kaṁsa.
-
khyātaḥ ca
—
and (this is) widely known
Khyāta (famed) + ca. The very fame that ordinarily protects a brāhmaṇa here endangers Kṛṣṇa. Gauḍīyas note: bhakti often requires hiding (gūḍha) one's qualifications; Caitanya hid His Bhagavān-tattva for the same reason.
-
saṁskṛtam
—
having undergone the purificatory process
Past participle of saṁ-√kṛ. The act of saṁskāra leaves a trace that can be read — exactly Garga's concern. Even invisible Vedic acts leave subtle evidence the sinful Kaṁsa-network can sniff out.
-
devakī - sutam
—
(would be considered) the son of Devakī
Tatpuruṣa: 'son of Devakī'. The exact identification Kaṁsa is hunting. The verse condenses the danger into one compound — perform the saṁskāra publicly, and devakī-sutam becomes the conclusion Kaṁsa draws.
Garga Muni indirectly disclosed that Kṛṣṇa was the son of Devakī, not of Yaśodā. Since Kaṁsa was already searching for Kṛṣṇa, if the purificatory process were undertaken by Garga Muni, Kaṁsa might be informed, and that would create a catastrophe. It may be argued that although Garga Muni was the priest of the Yadu dynasty, Nanda Mahārāja also belonged to that dynasty. Nanda Mahārāja, however, was not acting as a kṣatriya. Therefore Garga Muni said, “If I act as your priest, this will confirm that Kṛṣṇa is the son of Devakī.”
Garga appears to refuse the request since it would reveal the sons. Garga was famous as the priest of the Yadus and because of this, Kaṁsa would possibly suspect that the boys were Devakī’s sons.

- Notice when broadcasting your spiritual role would endanger the very service you mean to render, and choose quiet effectiveness over visible credit.
- Speak to your guide today about a duty you are performing publicly, and ask whether a more hidden form would actually protect Kṛṣṇa's interest better.
- Refuse to confuse social position with sva-dharma — like Nanda Mahārāja, act in the role Kṛṣṇa has placed you in, not the one your lineage entitles you to claim.
A goldsmith who knows that hammering the royal child's signet in the open courtyard would summon the assassin chooses to seal it inside a curtained workshop. Garga, openly the Yadu-purohita, sees that any public saṁskāra would betray Kṛṣṇa to Kaṁsa — and so he asks Nanda to weigh the cost before he begins.
After the lacquer-palace plot, the Pāṇḍavas lived hidden as brāhmaṇa mendicants in Ekacakrā village, never disclosing their kṣatriya identity even when Bhīma slew the rākṣasa Bakāsura (Mahābhārata, Ādi Parva). The protection of dharma sometimes required concealing one's title.
Garga's reasoning in 10.8.7 belongs to the same dharma-logic: disclosure of one's role can endanger the very work it would seem to authorize. Discretion is itself surrender.
