  • tumulam — tumultuous
Adjective for sound and disturbance; the same word the Mahābhārata uses for Kurukṣetra's noise. Bhāgavata war-vocabulary is borrowed directly from Vyāsa's larger frame.
  • loma-harṣaṇam — making bodily hair stand on end
Contiguous join (loma + harṣaṇam) from synonyms. In aesthetic theory loma-harṣa is the bodily mark of rasa — fear or wonder. In bhakti-rasa-śāstra, romāñca is one of the eight sāttvika-bhāvas. The same physiological sign serves either adbhuta or bhayānaka rasa.
  • asurāṇām — of the demons
Genitive plural of asura. Śuka quietly names Śālva's side asura — not as insult but as classification. Devotees ride out under bhāgavata vocabulary even before swords cross.
  • vibudhaiḥ — with the demigods
Instrumental of vibudha — 'highly awake.' The Yadus are likened to vibudhas. Gauḍīya doctrine: those in Kṛṣṇa's parikara are super-awake, while asuras are super-asleep, however violently they move.
  • pravavṛte — began
Perfect of pra + √vṛt. Vṛtti is mode-of-being; pravṛtti is engagement, going-forth. Gauḍīyas distinguish pravṛtti-mārga (the path of engagement, even in war) from nivṛtti-mārga (withdrawal). The Yadus fight pravṛtti-mārga sanctioned by Kṛṣṇa.
A tumultuous, hair-raising battle then commenced between Śālva’s forces and the Yadus. It equaled the great battles between the demons and demigods.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
A tumultuous, hair-raising battle then commenced between Śālva's forces and the Yadus. It equaled the great battles between the demons and demigods.
Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Śālvānām refers to persons coming from Śālva’s province or his followers. It was like the famous battle between the devatās and demons. This shows the large extent of fighting. Or it was even greater in tumultuousness and astonishment.

A tumultuous hair-raising battle began, equal to ancient demigod-demon wars. Some struggles are genuinely epic; we don't have to apologize for the scale of our fight.
Reflection Questions
  • Have I been underplaying the scale of a real struggle in my life?
  • What would acknowledging its weight do for my strategy?

Like the deva-asura battles by which the Bhāgavatam measures every later war, the Yadu-Śālva clash earns the same simile. Bhagavān's people are devas-on-earth; the asura's army is the same old shadow in new iron.

The churning of the milk-ocean

In SB 8.5–9 the devas and asuras together churn the kṣīra-sāgara — but at every moment of advantage the asuras try to seize the result, and the devas only by Viṣṇu's mediation receive amṛta. Devāsura-saṅgrāma is the Bhāgavatam's archetypal war.

The verse here invokes that archetype to position Yadu vs Śālva. Result is therefore foreknown to the listener: wherever a deva-asura battle is named, the devas win because Viṣṇu has already decided the share. The narrative tension is rasa, not outcome.
