  • bhagavān — the Supreme Lord
Bhāgavatam's standard title. Full in six opulences. Gauḍīyas insist: 'Bhagavān' is not 'God' generically; it is the Person who possesses these six fully. Kṛṣṇa is svayaṁ-bhagavān.
  • nyāvātsīt — He remained
Perfect of ni-√vas (to dwell). Bhagavān, who is everywhere, chose to DWELL HERE. Sthāna for the bhakta's sake. Gauḍīya doctrine: the Lord's residence in the devotee's vicinity is not metaphysics; it is prema's gravity.
  • tat-priyam-karaḥ — acting for his pleasure
Compound + agent noun: doing what was dear to him. The Lord makes the devotee's pleasure His criterion. This inverts the standard religious diagram — and is the Gauḍīya keynote.
  • prasthāpya — having sent off
Absolutive of pra-√sthā. He sent the Yadus on; He Himself stayed. Even Kṛṣṇa's family obeys His ordering for one bhakta's sake.
  • kuśasthalīm — to Dvārakā
Dvārakā's other name. The Yadus' home. Kṛṣṇa is dispatching His own people home to remain with one Pāṇḍava — the Bhāgavatam's quiet superlative.
My dear Parīkṣit, the Supreme Lord remained there for some time to please the King, after first sending Sāmba and the other Yadu heroes back to Dvārakā.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
My dear Parīkṣit, the Supreme Lord remained there for some time to please the King, after first sending Sāmba and the other Yadu heroes back to Dvārakā.

Commentary

One should not think that Kṛṣṇa who is independent did not want to stay. Rather, because having affection for his devotee, his affection manifested in staying. Though he was supremely independent (bhagavān api) he stayed in Indraprastha along with his queens constantly (ni—avātsīt) in order to please his devotee Yudhiṣṭhira (tat-priyaṁ-karaḥ). “But he should also please the people of Dvārkā who were suffering from his long absence.” He sent the Yadu heroes back in order to pacify them. “How could they be pacified by his sending them?” They were his expansions. He sent back Sāmba and others back since Pradyumna had stayed in Dvārakā. He sent Sāmba and others back with their sons and their mothers.

Kṛṣṇa stayed to please Yudhiṣṭhira, sending other Yadus back first. The Lord's tender response to a devotee's love is to stay a little longer than necessary; bhakti can win that.
Reflection Questions
  • Where might my love be inviting the Lord to stay 'a little longer' in my life?
  • How can I make my heart a place He chooses to linger?

The Supreme Lord, who could leave in an instant, lingers. Like a mother who sends the older children home first so she can sit one more hour with the youngest, Kṛṣṇa dispatches the Yadu heroes and stays — because Yudhiṣṭhira's prema asks Him to.
