  • suhṛt-sambandhi-bāndhavān — friends, relatives and family members
Triple compound: suhṛt (friend) + sambandhi (relative) + bāndhava (kin). Three concentric rings — and Kṛṣṇa is named separately, outside all three. He is something other than category.
  • premṇā — out of love
Instrumental of preman. Not affection (sneha), not attachment (rāga) — prema. The Gauḍīya summit-word for the bhakta's love. Yudhiṣṭhira's grip is prema's grip.
  • nivārayām āsa — he stopped them
Periphrastic perfect — sustained, repeated effort. He kept stopping them. Gauḍīyas read the grammatical 'ongoing' note as the chapter's gentle joke: love does not stop trying to keep what it loves.
  • tyāga-kātaraḥ — distressed by separation
Compound: tyāga (giving up, separation) + kātara (distressed). Vipralambha-bhāva — separation-mood — is one of Gauḍīya theology's deepest rasa-categories. Yudhiṣṭhira feels its smallest cousin here.
At that time Rājā Yudhiṣṭhira stopped a number of his friends, immediate family members and other relatives from departing, among them Lord Kṛṣṇa. Out of love Yudhiṣṭhira could not let them go, for he felt the pain of imminent separation.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
At that time Rājā Yudhiṣṭhira stopped a number of his friends, immediate family members and other relatives from departing, among them Lord Kṛṣṇa. Out of love Yudhiṣṭhira could not let them go, for he felt the pain of imminent separation.
Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

It was already said briefly that Kṛṣṇa along with his wives left though Yudhiṣṭhira did not want this to happen. This happened later. After sending off persons related to the sacrifice, he made some who wanted to return home stay, out of great affection for them. After the sacrifice (tataḥ) after sending the priests to their abodes, he prevented close friends like Bhīṣma, relatives like Drupada, other well-wishers and Kṛṣṇa, Svayam Bhagavān from leaving. The reason was previously stated. Now the effects of that impeding separation are described: he was overcome with suffering of separation.

Related verses
Yudhiṣṭhira would not let Kṛṣṇa and other intimates depart — he felt the pain of imminent separation. Devotion includes the ache of letting the Lord and His devotees go. The tightness is itself love.
Reflection Questions
  • What separation am I bracing for, and could I honor the love it reveals?
  • Where could I be more present now to one who will eventually leave?

A devotee whose ascent has reached its summit does not want the climbing party to disperse. Yudhiṣṭhira stops Kṛṣṇa from leaving the way Yaśodā ties Him in the courtyard — love refusing the geography of separation.

Vidura cannot let Maitreya go

Canto 3 records Vidura, at the end of long instruction by Maitreya Ṛṣi, similarly unable to release his teacher's company — the heart's standard reaction to extended Vaiṣṇava sat-saṅga.

The Bhāgavatam pattern is consistent: bhakti makes proximity intolerable to give up. Yudhiṣṭhira's tyāga-kātaratā is not weakness; it is the right response to having had Kṛṣṇa in the house.
