  • sura-rucaḥ — whose complexions were like the demigods'
Compound: sura (demigod) + ruc (radiance). The crowd glows. Gauḍīya reading: proximity to a Vaiṣṇava-yajña is itself cosmetic; bhakti shows on the skin.
  • maṇi-kuṇḍala — with jeweled earrings
Compound: maṇi (jewel) + kuṇḍala (earring). The Bhāgavatam's detailed ornament-vocabulary — never anti-aesthetic. The body is dressed for the Lord's darśana.
  • mahā-arghya-hārāḥ — with very precious pearl necklaces
Compound: mahā (great) + arghya (valuable) + hāra (necklace). Pearls again — the strung-together motif. The whole assembly is one strung garland, with Yudhiṣṭhira's yajña as its thread.
  • kanaka-mekhalayā — with golden belts
Compound: kanaka (gold) + mekhalā (waist-band). The women's ornament. Gauḍīyas note the chapter's restraint: the ornaments are detailed, but no individual is fetishized.
All the men there shone like demigods. They were adorned with jeweled earrings, flower garlands, turbans, waistcoats, silk dhotīs and valuable pearl necklaces. The lovely faces of the women were beautified by their matched earrings and locks of hair, and they all wore golden belts.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
All the men there shone like demigods. They were adorned with jeweled earrings, flower garlands, turbans, waistcoats, silk dhotīs and valuable pearl necklaces. The lovely faces of the women were beautified by their matched earrings and locks of hair, and they all wore golden belts.
Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Janāḥ refers to the men. They shone like devatās because of their jewels. Dukūla means silk cloth worn around the waist. Though the women had many ornaments, the earrings are mentioned because they were the main ornaments. The golden belts made their waists beautiful. Or because they had jeweled earrings, their beauty of their faces were served by the earrings and locks.

Concepts
Jiva
Men shone like demigods in jeweled earrings and silk dhotīs; women wore matched earrings, locks, and golden belts. Festival is also a visual offering; beauty in dress is part of the bhāva.
Reflection Questions
  • Where could the way I present myself become an offering rather than mere display?
  • What visual care of self honors the occasion?

When a yajña is real, even the assembled crowd looks like the heavenly host — borrowed sura-rucā. The ornaments are physical, but the radiance is reflected: Kṛṣṇa, present, lends His glow to everyone in the room. Verse 35 will name the eye that does the lending.
