Important Words
-
deva - yajanam
—
the place for worshiping the demigods
Compound: deva + yajana. The technical name for the consecrated sacrificial ground. Gauḍīyas note that the soil itself must be made fit before yajña — outer order mirrors the inner.
-
svarṇa
—
gold
Su (good) + varṇa (colour). Vedic culture uses gold not for show but as the metal that does not corrupt — fit for what must remain undefiled. Even ploughing is done with the incorruptible.
-
yathā - āmnāyam
—
according to the standard authorities
Compound: yathā (as) + āmnāya (received tradition, śruti). The Rājasūya is performed exactly by the book — this matters, because the verse-cluster ahead will not break the book; it will reveal what the book was always pointing to (Kṛṣṇa).
-
dīkṣayām cakrire
—
they initiated
Periphrastic perfect of √dīkṣ. Dīkṣā here is the yajamāna-dīkṣā — the king's consecration as sacrificer. Gauḍīyas link the broader sense: dīkṣā transmits adhikāra; only after it may the rite proceed.
The brāhmaṇa priests then plowed the sacrificial ground with golden plowshares and initiated King Yudhiṣṭhira for the sacrifice in accordance with the traditions set down by standard authorities.

Personal Guidance
The priests plowed the ground with golden plowshares and initiated the King. Preparation of the ground precedes the offering; we cannot skip the plowing and expect a harvest.
Reflection Questions
- What 'ground' in my life needs plowing before I can offer well?
- Where am I trying to harvest where I have not yet broken the soil?
Analogy
Before a temple is built, the priests turn the soil with a golden plough so that every furrow remembers its purpose. The Rājasūya's earth is opened with svarṇa-lāṅgalas — even the ground beneath the yajña is dignified before the first oblation is poured.
