  • sama-śikṣā-bala-ojasoḥ — of equal training, strength, and stamina
Compound genitive dual. Three parameters: śikṣā (technical training), bala (raw strength), ojas (sustained stamina). All three are equal. The Bhāgavatam is precise — only divine intervention can break this.
  • nirviśeṣam — indecisive
Accusative neuter. Nirviśeṣa — without distinguishing feature. The fight has no asymmetry to exploit. Gauḍīya: in material symmetry only Kṛṣṇa's mercy creates difference.
  • akṣīṇa-javayoḥ — whose exertion was undiminished
Compound genitive dual. Akṣīṇa-java — energy not waning. Twenty-seven days into the duel, neither fighter shows fatigue. This is the impasse Kṛṣṇa must end.
As they thus fought, this contest between opponents of equal training, strength and stamina reached no conclusion. And so they kept on fighting, O King, without any letup.

Some ācāryas include the following two verses in the text of this chapter, and Śrīla Prabhupāda has also translated them in Kṛṣṇa: evaṁ tayor mahā-rāja yudhyatoḥ sapta-viṁśatiḥ dināni niragaṁs tatra suhṛd-van niśi tiṣṭhatoḥ ekadā mātuleyaṁ vai prāha rājan vṛkodaraḥ na śakto ’haṁ jarāsandhaṁ nirjetuṁ yudhi mādhava “At the end of each day’s fighting, they lived at night as friends in Jarāsandha’s palace, and the next day they fought again. In this way they passed twenty-seven days in fighting. On the twenty-eighth day, Bhīmasena told Kṛṣṇa, ‘My dear Kṛṣṇa, must frankly admit that I cannot conquer Jarāsandha.’”

Translation
As they thus fought, this contest between opponents of equal training, strength and stamina reached no conclusion. And so they kept on fighting, O King, without any letup.

Commentary

They fought without becoming tired (akṣīṇa-javayoḥ). They did not stop fighting.

Concepts
Jiva
Equal in training, strength, and stamina, the contest reached no conclusion. Some matters cannot be settled by force alone; we need a different kind of insight to break the deadlock.
Reflection Questions
  • Where am I locked in a deadlock that more effort will not resolve?
  • What kind of insight, not effort, is the situation asking for?

Two scales perfectly balanced cannot tip until weight is added to one pan. The duel is dead-locked because the contestants are equal. Without external intervention the duel would simply continue. Verse 40 supplies the weight — Kṛṣṇa pours svena tejasā into Bhīma's pan.
