  • śravaṇāt kīrtanāt dhyānāt — from hearing, chanting, and meditating
Three of the nine limbs of bhakti (SB 7.5.23) in a single phrase. Bhāgavata's nine-fold bhakti opens here as the universal purifier. Birth-status is irrelevant; engagement with Bhagavān is everything.
  • ante-vasāyinaḥ — those who dwell at the end (outcastes, low-born)
Literally 'those who live at the edge of the village.' Bhāgavata's signature word for those excluded by varṇa-system. The verse explicitly includes them in purification — the most expansive bhakti-doctrine in the SB.
  • brahma-mayasya — of (You who are) full of Brahman, consisting of the Absolute
Bhagavān is brahma-maya — His entire being is Brahman, but personally so. The Gauḍīya: Kṛṣṇa is brahma in the sense of being its source (BG 14.27), not in the sense of being impersonal.
  • abhimarśinaḥ — those who touch
Abhimarśin — one who touches with respect. The verse climaxes with sparśana, touch. For the Gauḍīyas, touching the deity, the guru's feet, the dust of Vraja — these are all the same abhimarśa as touching Bhagavān Himself.
O Lord, even outcastes are purified by hearing and chanting Your glories and meditating upon You, the Absolute Truth. What then to speak of those who see and touch You?

Śrīla Śrīdhara Svāmī interprets the word brahma-mayasya to mean brahma-ghana-mūrteḥ, “of the concentrated form of the Absolute Truth.”

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
O Lord, even outcastes are purified by hearing and chanting Your glories and meditating upon You, the Absolute Truth. What then to speak of those who see and touch You?
Commentary

"But what is the purpose in their seeing me?" this verse answers. "Even the outcastes become purified by hearing, chanting and meditating on you, who are the form of concentrated Brahman (brahma mayasya)."

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Those who are outcastes are purified of the fault of their birth by hearing, chanting and meditating. What to speak of those who see and touch you? Or, what to speak of those who experience you by seeing you?

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Even outcastes are purified of faulty birth by thinking of all your limbs (dhyānāt). This is because of your influence. O Lord (īśa)! What to speak of those who see or touch you, or touch you through seeing.

'Even outcastes are purified by hearing and chanting Your glories; what then to speak of those who see and touch You?' No level of distance from the Lord is too great for purification to begin.
Reflection Questions
  • Have I underestimated the purifying power of simply hearing and chanting?
  • What attempt at chanting could I renew today, however imperfect?

Even the lowest-born are purified by śravaṇa, kīrtana, and dhyāna of Bhagavān — what then of those who see and touch Him? It is like a single drop of His water-from-feet cleansing a vast field; those who walk into the river itself are bathed in totality.

Haridāsa Ṭhākura's birth

Caitanya Mahāprabhu's eternal associate Haridāsa Ṭhākura was born in a Muslim family — by social rule, an ante-vāsāyī. Yet Mahāprabhu named him nāmācārya, the foremost teacher of the holy name.

This very verse — śravaṇāt, kīrtanāt, dhyānāt, even outcastes are purified — was Mahāprabhu's textual basis for receiving Haridāsa. The Gauḍīya tradition's openness to all classes traces directly to this Bhāgavata verse.
