Important Words
-
jighṛkṣavaḥ
—
determined to capture
Desiderative of grah, 'wanting to seize.' The Kuru aim is not victory in battle but seizure of a boy — the predatory frame is built into the word.
-
kruddhāḥ
—
angry
The Kurus are repeatedly described as angry in this chapter (kupitāḥ, kruddhāḥ, prakopitāḥ). Anger fuelled by pride is the unifying note.
-
tiṣṭha tiṣṭha iti
—
“Stand! Stand!”
The classic kṣatriya battle-shout. But Sāmba already stands (verse 6) — the cry is the warriors' own bluster more than an instruction.
-
samākiran
—
they showered (him with arrows)
Six bowmen against one. The asymmetry is the Kurus' shame, not their glory — verse 22 will name this adharma explicitly.
Determined to capture him, the angry bowmen led by Karṇa shouted at Sāmba, ‘Stand and fight! Stand and fight!’ They came straight for him and showered him with arrows.

Personal Guidance
The Kurus shouted 'Stand and fight!' and rained arrows on a single opponent. Mob pressure tries to overwhelm by numbers what cannot be defeated by arguments. Numbers do not make truth.
Reflection Questions
- Where am I swayed by majority pressure rather than truth?
- Have I ever joined a 'six against one' that I should have stepped back from?
Analogy
A pack of hounds barking 'stand and fight!' at a deer they have already cornered — the cry of those who outnumber, not the cry of dharma.
