Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.68.48
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
sarva - bhūta - ātman
—
O Soul of all beings
Ātman — the inner Self. The Lord is the antaryāmin of every being, including the Kurus who insulted Him. This recognition is the seed of all bhakti — 'You are within me; You are my own Self's witness.'
-
sarva - śakti - dhara
—
O wielder of all energies
Śakti-dhara — Bhagavān as bearer of all energies (cit, bahiraṅgā, taṭasthā). The Kurus address Him by His structural-theological name. Late but correct.
-
viśva - karman
—
O maker of the universe
Distinct from Viśvakarman the architect-demigod — here meaning the Lord as cosmic agent. Bhagavān's name re-claimed from its surface usage.
-
śaraṇam gatāḥ
—
have come for shelter
Śaraṇa-gati formally completed. The technical-theological term of Vaiṣṇava surrender. The Kurus have now performed it; whatever else they did before, this moment alone matters.
The Kauravas clearly realized that their lives and destinies were in the hands of the Lord.
In case he says, "I will kill you evil people." they recite his names. "As you have all powers, you hold the power to kill us or maintain us. As you are inexhaustible, (avyaya) killing us or letting us live is neither loss nor gain. But this universe is a result of your actions, and therefore you should let us live."
Seeing that he did not stop pulling the city, they became terrified. They began chanting his dear names and bowing down in surrender. We offer respects because you are the soul of all beings, Paramātmā. Thus you have all powers because you alone arrange for the senses to function (sarva-śaktidhara) and you are endowed with all powers (avyaya). Therefore you create the universe (viśva-karman). Let us offer obeisance. Let that remain eternally (astu). Because of the qualities listed, you are worthy of being our shelter. You are the supremely powerful because you possess all śaktis. You are inexhaustible in those powers. Therefore you create the universe.
- What pride in me must give way before genuine shelter can be taken?
- What simple sentence of surrender could I offer the Lord today?
Children who have run out of arguments simply fall into their father's lap. The Kurus, theology exhausted, do exactly this — bowing once, bowing again, asking only for shelter.
