  • deva-gandharva — demigods and Gandharvas
Compound: deva + gandharva. The upper-celestial categories. Gauḍīyas note: Citralekhā starts at the top of the hierarchy and works down, expecting Ūṣā's lover to be among the devas — but Bhagavān's vyūha is hidden among the 'humans,' the Yadus.
  • alikhat — she drew
Imperfect of ā + √likh. The same root that gives lekhā in her name. Citralekhā does what she is named to do — Sanskrit's habit of letting nāma and karma coincide is one of the small consolations of reading the Bhāgavatam slowly.
  • yathā — accurately
Adverb ("in the manner that is real"). Her drawings are not stylized — they are faithful. Gauḍīyas note: bhakti-art is realist about Kṛṣṇa, not abstract; the goal is recognition, not aesthetic distance.
Saying this, Citralekhā proceeded to draw accurate pictures of various demigods, Gandharvas, Siddhas, Cāraṇas, Pannagas, Daityas, Vidyādharas, Yakṣas and humans.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

According to Ūsā’s description Citralekhā drew other men in order to show her power of omniscience. This instilled faith in Ūṣā. She even drew pictures of yogīs since there innumerable numbers of powerful entities in the universe.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Since devatās also have two arms, she drew pictures of them also. According to Ūsā’s description Citralekhā drew other men in order to show her power of omniscience. This instilled faith in Ūṣā. She even drew pictures of yogīs since there innumerable numbers of powerful entities in the universe.

Jiva
Citralekhā drew accurate pictures of demigods, Gandharvas, Siddhas, Cāraṇas, Daityas, Vidyādharas, Yakṣas and humans. Art in service of love can survey vast worlds for the single face that matters to a friend.
Reflection Questions
  • What creative gift of mine could I place in the service of someone else's search?
  • How does breadth of knowledge become precious when narrowed by love's purpose?

Like a scholar who lays out every coin in the kingdom on a table so the merchant can pick out the one she remembers, Citralekhā draws devas, gandharvas, daityas, humans — the whole catalogue of conditioned beings — to find the one face that is not catalogued at all.
