  • satyabhāmā — Satyabhāmā
satya (truth) + bhāmā (passionate, radiant woman). Second of the aṣṭa-mahiṣīs, embodiment of māna (loving pride) in Gauḍīya rasa-analysis. Her name itself anticipates the bhānu-cluster of her sons.
  • ātmajāḥ — the sons
ātma + ja, 'self-born.' The Sanskrit construes children as the parents' own self extending — fitting the theological point that Kṛṣṇa's sons are not other than His ātmā.
  • jāmbavatyāḥ — of Jāmbavatī
Daughter of the bear-king Jāmbavān from Rāmāyaṇa, won by Kṛṣṇa after a 27-day duel (SB 10.56). Her presence in Dvārakā is the bridge between Rāma-līlā and Kṛṣṇa-līlā — the same Lord, the same Jāmbavān, two yugas later.
  • sāmba-ādyāḥ — headed by Sāmba
Sāmba, 'with the Sāma-veda' — born of the chants Kṛṣṇa performed at Prabhāsa. The same Sāmba later figures in the Yadu-vaṁśa's destruction (SB 11.1), a sober echo within this dynastic celebration.
  • sammatāḥ — favored
sam + mata, 'agreed with, approved.' Kṛṣṇa's particular fondness for Sāmba's line is recorded plainly — even within the Lord's family there are gradations of favor, which Gauḍīyas read as the play of personal relationships rather than mechanical equality.
The ten sons of Satyabhāmā were Bhānu, Subhānu, Svarbhānu, Prabhānu, Bhānumān, Candrabhānu, Bṛhadbhānu, Atibhānu (the eighth), Śrībhānu and Pratibhānu. Sāmba, Sumitra, Purujit, Śatajit, Sahasrajit, Vijaya, Citraketu, Vasumān, Draviḍa and Kratu were the sons of Jāmbavatī. These ten, headed by Sāmba, were their father’s favorites.

Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī translates the compound pitṛ-sammatāḥ in this verse as “highly regarded by their father.” The word also indicates that these sons, like the others already mentioned, were regarded as being just like their glorious father, Lord Kṛṣṇa.

Translation
The ten sons of Satyabhāmā were Bhānu, Subhānu, Svarbhānu, Prabhānu, Bhānumān, Candrabhānu, Bṛhadbhānu, Atibhānu (the eighth), Śrībhānu and Pratibhānu. Sāmba, Sumitra, Purujit, Śatajit, Sahasrajit, Vijaya, Citraketu, Vasumān, Draviḍa and Kratu were the sons of Jāmbavatī. These ten, headed by Sāmba, were their father's favorites.
Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Three lines list Satyabhāmā’s sons. Atibhānu was elder to Śrībhānu. The order is from elder to youngest again. Though Jāmbavatī was elder, Satyambhāma’s sons are mentioned first out of greater love for her and Sathyabhāmā’s excellent position. That will be explained later. The next three lines list Jāmbavatī’s sons. Instead of Draviṇa sometimes Draviḍa is seen. These only were confirmed as the sons of Jāmbavatī by their father. In the Sāmba Purāṇa it is stated that, by the arrangement of Nārada, Sāmba tried to deceive the sages with the iron lump. This was the will of the Lord, to teach common people as was the consequent curse on the dynasty.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

The eighth son is particularly singled out because he was more effulgent than Cārudeṣṇa and others. Though Jāmbavatī was elder, Satyambhāma’s sons are mentioned first because her sons were born first and were elder, or Satyabhāmā’s love was superior. Ete indicates that Kṛṣṇa had special affection for those sons. Thus Sāmba’s offenses was nullified. Actually his act was illusory, for teaching people.

Satya
Satyabhāmā's and Jāmbavatī's sons are named — Sāmba and his brothers were their father's favorites, regarded as just like Kṛṣṇa Himself. The Lord embraces His devotees with the warmth of a doting father.
Reflection Questions
  • Do I let myself feel Kṛṣṇa's affection as a father, or do I hold Him at a formal distance?
  • Whom in my life can I regard with that same generous, approving gaze today?

Like ten suns rising from one Satyabhāmā-horizon — Bhānu, Subhānu, Svarbhānu — every son's name carries the syllable bhānu, as if Kṛṣṇa, who wore the Syamantaka jewel given by her father, gave back ten radiances to His radiant queen.

Satyabhāmā and the Syamantaka

In SB 10.56–57, Satyabhāmā's father Satrājit owned the Syamantaka jewel, which yielded eight bhāras of gold a day. After accusations against Kṛṣṇa, Satrājit gave both his daughter and the jewel to the Lord. Satyabhāmā's pride in her radiant origin — solar in lineage — surfaces here in her sons' names: ten variations of bhānu, 'sun.'

Jāmbavatī's sons, by contrast, carry no single radiant theme — Sāmba is named after the Sāman chant. The naming patterns themselves preserve the rasa-distinctions Gauḍīyas read in the queens.
