  • sahasā — immediately, at once
Adverb. The promptness is doctrinal: a bhakta-king does not weigh decorum when Bhagavān appears. Gauḍīyas read sahasā as a marker of spontaneous bhāva — the rāja-ṛṣi's body responds before his protocol can.
  • prīta - mānasaḥ — with affectionate mind
Compound: prīta (delighted, loving) + mānasa (mind). Bhāgavatam grammar of bhakti: not 'pleased to see' but 'a mind made of pleasure.' Gauḍīyas link prīti to one of the technical names of the sthāyi-bhāva that grows into prema.
  • vidhi - vat — according to scriptural injunction
Compound: vidhi (rule, injunction) + vat (like, according to). The worship is not improvised but follows śāstra. Gauḍīyas note: bhakti and vidhi are not opposed when the heart is right — Janaka offers worship that is at once spontaneous and scriptural.
  • arhaṇīyam — the worshipable one
Gerundive of √arh. Balarāma is the proper object of worship — Bhāgavata insists on Bhagavān's worshipability even at the moment He is receiving the worship. Gauḍīyas regard Balarāma as the original ārādhya for those in the sakhya-mood of His associates.
The King of Mithilā immediately rose from his seat when he saw Lord Balarāma approaching. With great love the King honored the supremely worshipable Lord by offering Him elaborate worship, as stipulated by scriptural injunctions.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
The King of Mithilā immediately rose from his seat when he saw Lord Balarāma approaching. With great love the King honored the supremely worshipable Lord by offering Him elaborate worship, as stipulated by scriptural injunctions.
Commentary

Understanding that Krsna, who was omniscient, was fooling him, Balarama, with covered anger, said, "I will go to Mithila. You go to Dvaraka and give the jewel to your beloved, but I will not go to Dvaraka."

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

The king rose suddenly because Balarāma came unexpectedly and alone. He worshipped him with the best articles (samarhaṇaiḥ) worthy for honoring someone (arhanīyam). Instead of arhaṇīyaṁ sometimes arhaṇam vai is seen. Vai means famous.

Related verses
Janaka rises immediately upon seeing Balarāma, honoring Him with elaborate worship as scripture stipulates. Royal protocol honors divine arrival fully; no abbreviation when the Supreme visits.
Reflection Questions
  • Where do you abbreviate proper protocol when the Lord visits?
  • What elaborate welcome could you actually offer?

Janaka rises the instant he sees Balarāma — the body of a true bhakta does not need its mind's permission to stand for Bhagavān. Gauḍīyas treat this rising as the somatic signature of sajātīya-prīti, recognition by a like-natured soul.
