  • vidyām — mystic knowledge, vidyā
Accusative of vidyā — feminine knowledge-power, contrasted with avidyā. In Gauḍīya theology, vidyā always names a personalist knowing that joins the knower to a person, not a fact about an impersonal field.
  • mahā-māyām — the Mahā-māyā vidyā
Compound: mahā (great) + māyām (māyā). Distinct from the limited māyā Śambara wields — Mahā-māyā is Bhagavān's own internal potency (svarūpa-śakti). Gauḍīyas distinguish māyā-śakti (covering) from yoga-māyā / mahā-māyā (revelatory).
  • mahā-ātmane — to the great soul
Compound: mahā (great) + ātmane (to the soul, dative of ātman). Pradyumna is mahā-ātmā — not in the modern abstract sense, but as a Viṣṇu-tattva expansion. The wife who hands Him the vidyā recognizes His scale.
  • sarva-māyā-vināśinīm — which destroys all other māyās
Compound: sarva (all) + māyā (illusions) + vināśinīm (destroying, fem.). The vidyā is one and yet undoes hundreds. Gauḍīya pattern: there is no count-of-tools required for the Lord — one śuddha-nāma, one mahā-mantra, undoes the entire fabric of illusion.
[Śukadeva Gosvāmī continued:] Speaking thus, Māyāvatī gave to the great soul Pradyumna the mystic knowledge called Mahā-māyā, which vanquishes all other deluding spells.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
[Śukadeva Gosvāmī continued:] Speaking thus, Māyāvatī gave to the great soul Pradyumna the mystic knowledge called Mahāmāyā, which vanquishes all other deluding spells.
Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

She spoke to incite passion (pra—bhāsya). The cause of her desire to make him act was that he was a great person (mahātmane) suitable to kill Śambara because of his manifested intelligence and strength, even though he was young. Or he was grave (mahātmane), not revealing his powers.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

In this way she spoke with passion to Pradyumna who was very intelligent (mahātmane). He was capable of learning the knowledge. She had more powers than Śambara. Thus her knowledge was called Mahā-māyā. It could destroy all of the illusions known to Śambara. Or he had unrestricted power (mahātmane). She was bewildered by prema (māyāvatī). Though he had all knowledge she gave him knowledge because of her bewilderment in prema.

Māyāvatī gives Pradyumna the mystic knowledge Mahā-māyā, which vanquishes all other deluding spells. Weapons are knowledge in spiritual combat; the right consort transmits the right knowledge.
Reflection Questions
  • What 'mahā-māyā knowledge' has someone transmitted to you that you haven't yet used?
  • Where does intimate teaching become combat-ready knowledge?

Māyāvatī hands her husband the Mahā-māyā vidyā — a wife arming her Lord with the only mantra that unmakes every other māyā. The internal potency disarms the external. Bhagavān receives even His weapons from His own śakti, never from anywhere else.
