  • madhu - parkam — the traditional honey-milk mixture
Compound: madhu (honey) + parka (mixture). The śāstric drink offered to a snātaka, king, ācārya, or bridegroom. Bhīṣmaka unknowingly performs the bridegroom-rite for Kṛṣṇa — the marriage has already begun ritually.
  • vidhi - vat — according to scriptural prescriptions
Adverb: vidhi (rule) + suffix -vat. The same vidhi-vat that recurs throughout Bhīṣmaka's actions (verses 10, 16). Gauḍīyas note: rule-correct ritual offered to Bhagavān, even by accident, still reaches Him.
  • upāyanāni abhīṣṭāni — desirable presentations
Compound: upāyana (gift) + abhīṣṭa (desired). The verb-root √iṣ (to wish) sits at the heart of abhīṣṭa. The gifts Bhīṣmaka thinks 'desirable' are in fact what Kṛṣṇa Himself desires — being received by His devotee's family.
Presenting Them with madhu-parka, new clothing and other desirable gifts, he worshiped Them according to standard rituals.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Presenting Them with madhu-parka, new clothing and other desirable gifts, he worshiped Them according to standard rituals.
Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Having indicated the items, Śukadeva now describes how they were used. He brought the madhuparka near or offered it with service attitude as a gift. He also offered items dear to them or himself such as elephants, horses, and jewels. He worshipped them in a special way (sam) or as his son-in-laws.

Concepts
Jiva
Presenting Them with madhu-parka, new clothing, and other gifts, Bhīṣmaka worships Them per standard ritual. Even with mixed motives, standard worship is offered to the visiting Lord; ritual exceeds intention.
Reflection Questions
  • Where does your ritual exceed your mixed motives in serving the Lord?
  • How does standard form anchor uncertain hearts?

A king performs the welcome reserved for the highest guests — madhuparka, fresh clothes, gifts — for the two strangers who are in fact God Himself. The Vedic rite of arghya is correctly performed and ultimately correctly received, though Bhīṣmaka does not yet know the address has reached the right house.
