  • go-vraje — in the cow pasture
Compound: go (cow) + vraje (in Vraja). The locative sets the whole conversation in Vṛndāvana's pastures — go-vraja is the technical name of Kṛṣṇa's līlā-bhūmi, where He grazes cows. Gauḍīyas note it is the only place where Kṛṣṇa is svayaṁ-rūpa.
  • smaraṇīyam — that which is worth remembering
Gerundive of √smṛ (to remember). The whole chapter is a meditation on smaraṇa. The gopīs ask what is worth Kṛṣṇa's remembering — answering by their own ceaseless smaraṇa of Him.
  • sneha-anubandhaḥ — the attachment of affection
Compound: sneha (affection, oiliness) + anubandhaḥ (binding-after). Sneha in Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu is the fifth rung of prema's ladder, the moment love becomes inseparable. The gopīs name the very rasa Rūpa Gosvāmī codifies.
  • su-dustyajaḥ — very difficult to abandon
Compound: su (very) + dus (hard) + tyajaḥ (to be given up). The word dustyajaḥ returns at verse 61 of this chapter (the gopīs gave up the dustyajam family for Kṛṣṇa) — the poet is foreshadowing.
We see nothing else He might consider worth remembering in these cow pastures of Vraja. Indeed, the bonds of affection for one’s family members are difficult to break, even for a sage.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
We see nothing else He might consider worth remembering in these cow pastures of Vraja. Indeed, the bonds of affection for one's family members are difficult to break, even for a sage.
Commentary

"We do not see anyone else worthy of remembrance in Vraja. But if he disrespects even his father and mother Nanda and Yasoda, whom he is remembering, how is it possible that we or persons like us can have a place in his memory at all? Even those who take sannyasa find it hard to give up relationship with father and mother. But Krsna very easily has given up relationship with countless wives of others whom he enjoyed. What severe sense of renunciation Krsna has!"

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

He has sent you only because of them. Otherwise we do not see anything that the leader of the Yadus would consider worth remembering Vraja whose only wealth is cows. What to speak of actually remembering. The quality of his parents is that they remember him out of affection, though he does not. Bonds of affection for parents and others are hard to give even for sannyāsīs. It is possible to forget these relationships by great effort, but not immediately. In saying this they show his hard-heartedness.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Other than them (anyathā) we do not see any person for him to remember in Vraja with its cows. Out of misery they compare themselves to cows. One has affection for family members. Even ātmārāmas find it difficult to give up those attachments, what to speak of a person like him, with so much wealth.

Jiva
We see nothing else He might consider worth remembering in these pastures; family bonds are difficult to break even for a sage. The gopīs frankly say they aren't 'family' in the conventional sense — and conventional family is what He cares about.
Reflection Questions
  • Where do you confuse not being 'conventional family' with not being valued?
  • How do you hold the dignity of an unofficial relationship?

The bonds of sneha for one's own people cannot be cut by reasoning, the gopīs say — even a sage's sword breaks against them. Vraja-prema is that kind of bond: not chosen, not earned, but woven into Kṛṣṇa's own substance the way fragrance is woven into a flower.

Bharata's deer

Bharata Mahārāja, in Canto 5, renounced kingdom and family yet became entangled in attachment to a single orphaned fawn — and was reborn as a deer in his next life. The Bhāgavatam uses him as the textbook case of sneha-anubandha that even tapasvīs cannot cut.

The gopīs cite this universal rule but turn it: even Kṛṣṇa, they say, must feel sneha for His Vraja-bandhus. He cannot have forgotten.
