Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.47.48
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
santyaktum
—
to give up entirely
Infinitive of sam + √tyaj. Sam-intensifies tyāga — complete renunciation. The gopīs ask: who is capable even of attempting this? The verb form admits no actor.
-
uttamaḥśloka-saṁvidam
—
intimate talks with Kṛṣṇa
Compound: uttamaḥśloka + saṁvidam (intimate conversation, mutual knowing). Saṁvid is more than 'talk' — it is rasa-shastra's term for the lover-conversation that constitutes saṁyoga. Gauḍīyas read it as the substance of mādhurya.
-
śrīḥ aṅgāt na cyavate kvacit
—
Śrī never moves from His body
Phrase: Śrī + aṅgāt (from the body) + na cyavate (does not fall) + kvacit (ever). Lakṣmī's permanent residence on Kṛṣṇa's chest. The gopīs cite her as the unanswerable proof: separation from Him is impossible to choose.
"Though a greedy man may not attain his desired object, he cannot give up the desire for the object. Who has the ability to give up the beauty and sweetness of Krsna, Uttama sloka, once having attained it? No one can. Though Laksmi is ignored by Krsna, she does not give up the chest of Krsna, but remains there always as a golden line."
The gopīs elaborate their last statement. What person (kaḥ), what to speak of women, can attempt (utsaheta) to give up, what to speak of actually giving up statements made by Kṛṣṇa? How could persons fixed in knowledge completely disregard (santyaktum) those statements, what to speak of forgetting him? His qualities and form are elaborately described (uttamaḥśloka). He made statements like the following: na pāraye ’haṁ niravadya-saṁyujāṁ sva-sādhu-kṛtyaṁ vibudhāyuṣāpi vaḥ I am not able to repay my debt for your spotless service, even within a lifetime of Brahmā. SB 10.32.22 The words santyaktum, completely giving up, indicates that it is impossible to give up internal attachment and respect. Why is this said? He takes no interest in Lakṣmī. It is said: nāham ātmānam āśāse mad-bhaktaiḥ sādhubhir vinā śriyaṁ cātyantikīṁ brahman yeṣāṁ gatir ahaṁ parā O brāhmaṇa! Without the devotees, who take shelter of only me, I do not desire to enjoy Lakṣmī. SB 9.4.64 Though Kṛṣṇa does not give regard to Lakṣmī, because of his greater regard for those with intense anurāga, she remains always on his chest as a golden line. She does not move from his chest.
- Where do you stay close to Kṛṣṇa even when feeling unattended?
- What does Lakṣmī's posture teach about staying put?
Who can bear to give up the saṁvidā — the intimate talk — with Uttamaḥśloka? Even Lakṣmī, though He shows no special interest, cannot leave His chest. The gopīs argue: if even she cannot, how can we?
