  • sa-arthakam — worthwhile, meaningful
Compound: sa (with) + artha (purpose, meaning). 'My birth has-meaning.' The verse-formula of bhakti: pre-Kṛṣṇa life was nirarthaka; post-Kṛṣṇa darśana, sa-arthaka. The same shift Akrūra confessed at verses 4-5.
  • pāvitam — purified
Past participle of √pū. Sudāmā's kula is purified — not just himself, the entire family-line. Echoes the standard Vaiṣṇava promise: one bhakta purifies fourteen generations (echo of pitaraḥ in verse 13). Gauḍīyas: bhakti is intrinsically a family-purification.
  • pitṛ-deva-ṛṣayaḥ — forefathers, demigods, and sages
Triple compound: pitṛ + deva + ṛṣi. The three classes one is born indebted to (pitṛ-ṛṇa, deva-ṛṇa, ṛṣi-ṛṇa). Sudāmā's hospitality to Kṛṣṇa simultaneously pays all three debts. Bhakti is the master-key.
  • āgamanena — by the arrival
Instrumental of āgamana — coming, arrival. The arrival itself is the gift; no further act is needed. Gauḍīyas: Bhagavān's mere āgamana to a place is the place's promotion — Vṛndāvana, Navadvīpa, the bhakta's home alike.
[Sudāmā said:] O Lord, my birth is now sanctified and my family free of contamination. Now that You both have come here, my forefathers, the demigods and the great sages are certainly all satisfied with me.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
[Sudāmā said:] O Lord, my birth is now sanctified and my family free of contamination. Now that You both have come here, my forefathers, the demigods and the great sages are certainly all satisfied with me.
Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Then Sudāmā began praising him with devotion. His voice choked because of prema, he spoke excellently. He speaks in the plural (naḥ) to indicate his great respect for Kṛṣṇa’s coming there or to indicate his family members. By your coming, just by your touching the objects of my house, the Pitṛs and devatās are satisfied. What to speak of seeing you directly! My life has become successful by your coming and directly seeing the two of you. All ancestors and relatives, past and future have been delivered. Since the Pitṛs are satisfied all duties are fulfilled. The word hi indicates there is proof. Akrūra will later say: adyeśa no vasatayaḥ khalu bhūri-bhāgā yaḥ sarva-deva-pitṛ-bhūta-nṛ-deva-mūrtiḥ yat-pāda-śauca-salilaṁ tri-jagat punāti sa tvaṁ jagad-gurur adhokṣaja yāḥ praviṣṭaḥ Today, O Lord, my home has become most fortunate because you have entered it. As the Supreme Truth, you embody the forefathers, ordinary creatures, human beings and demigods, and the water that has washed your feet purifies the three worlds. Indeed, O transcendent one, you are the spiritual master of the universe. SB 10.48.5 The reason for all of this is that Kṛṣṇa was the Supreme Lord (prabho).

Sudāmā says: my birth is sanctified, family freed of contamination; forefathers, demigods, sages are now satisfied by Your coming. A single devotional event purifies multiple generations and unseen relationships.
Reflection Questions
  • Whose forefathers and unseen relationships might be satisfied by your devotion?
  • Where do you forget the multigenerational reach of single visits from Kṛṣṇa?

Sudāmā says aloud what every devotee discovers in the moment of darśana: 'My birth has finally meant something.' The whole genealogical line — pitṛs, devas, ṛṣis — receives the back-payment of meaning the instant Bhagavān crosses the threshold.
