  • buddhāya śuddhāya — to Buddha, the pure one
From √budh — to awaken. Gauḍīyas, following Jayadeva and the Bhāgavatam, accept Buddha as the Lord's avatāra in Kali-yuga, who appeared to stop animal sacrifice. The śuddha qualifier distinguishes the Bhāgavata-Buddha from later doctrinal Buddhism.
  • daitya-dānava-mohine — the bewilderer of the daityas and dānavas
Compound: daitya + dānava (demonic races) + mohin (one who bewilders). Buddha's deliberate moha-mission: divert those who would otherwise misuse Vedic karma-kāṇḍa. Gauḍīyas read this as the Lord's mercy by indirection.
  • mleccha-prāya-kṣatra-hantre — to the destroyer of mleccha-like kings
Compound: mleccha (barbarian, non-Vedic) + prāya (resembling) + kṣatra (kṣatriya) + hantṛ (slayer). Kalki's mission at yuga-end. Not an indictment of any people, but of mleccha-prāya — those acting as barbarians while occupying kṣatriya thrones.
  • kalki-rūpiṇe — to Him in the form of Kalki
Kalki + rūpin. The last of the daśāvatāra in the standard list. Akrūra closes the gallery with the avatāra still to come — completing the prayer's cosmic sweep before turning to personal confession in verse 23.
Obeisances to Your form as the faultless Lord Buddha, who will bewilder the Daityas and Dānavas, and to Lord Kalki, the annihilator of the meat-eaters posing as kings.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Obeisances to Your form as the faultless Lord Buddha, who will bewilder the Daityas and Dānavas, and to Lord Kalki, the annihilator of the meat-eaters posing as kings.
Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Though Buddha propagated scriptures opposed to the Vedas, he was faultless (śuddhāya) since the purpose was to bewilder demons. Kalki kills persons who imitate kṣatriyas by ruling the land, who are similar to mlecchas. Since he will enter among the mlecchas he is called Kalki (one who lives among the deceitful).

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Though Buddha propagated scriptures contrary to the Vedas he was pure (śuddhāya). Or he was most pure because he preached non-violence. Daityas were the sons of Diti. The Dānavas were sons of Danu. Buddha bewildered them, since he inspired them to follow dharmas contrary to Vedic sacrifices. That was his goal. Kalki kills the kṣatriyas who are mostly the lowest outcastes. Kalki has the form (rūpine) or dress of an outcaste (kalki), since at the end of Kali-yuga brāhmaṇas and others have the form of outcastes. He is empowered to begin Satya-yuga by destroying sin and the sinful people. In this way the forms and pastimes of each avatāra have been described. Though there are many other avatāras such as Kapila and Ṛṣabha, these only have been described since they are the famous ones, being the principal ones.

Obeisances to Lord Buddha, who will bewilder Daityas and Dānavas, and to Lord Kalki, the annihilator of meat-eaters posing as kings. Even Buddha and Kalki are recognized incarnations — devotional vision sees the Lord across surprising forms and times.
Reflection Questions
  • Where do you exclude an obvious 'incarnation' because you don't like the package?
  • How does honoring Buddha as Viṣṇu reshape your relationship with that tradition?

A surgeon's scalpel cuts what loving words could not reach; a king sometimes burns the field to save the kingdom. Buddha bewilders the daityas who would have abused Vedic ritual; Kalki will end the meat-eating impostor-kings at yuga's close. Both forms are the Lord's compassion in mode-of-severity — the same hand that lifted Govardhana also wields the scalpel and the sword.
