  • mādhavaḥ — the descendant of Madhu
Akrūra is a Yādava — descended from Madhu, the same line as Kṛṣṇa. The same epithet mādhava elsewhere belongs to Kṛṣṇa; using it for Akrūra here underscores the shared kula whose disease Kṛṣṇa diagnosed in v.5.
  • vaira - anubandham — the bond of enmity
Anubandha is the technical word for a continuing tie. Kaṁsa's hatred is not episodic but structural — vaira is the inverse of bhakti, an obsessive remembrance of the Lord that still draws Kaṁsa to his liberation (per Rūpa Gosvāmī).
  • vadha - udyamam — the attempt at murder
Udyama = the active 'rising-up' of effort. Kaṁsa's plan against Vasudeva is no whim but a sustained campaign — sets the legal-moral ground for Kṛṣṇa's coming intervention.
  • varṇayām āsa — he described
Periphrastic perfect from √varṇ — 'narrated, set forth.' Akrūra is the chapter's narrator-within-the-narrative, the Bhāgavata's preferred device for moving exposition.
Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: In response to the Supreme Lord’s request, Akrūra, the descendant of Madhu, described the whole situation, including King Kaṁsa’s enmity toward the Yadus and his attempt to murder Vasudeva.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: In response to the Supreme Lord's request, Akrūra, the descendant of Madhu, described the whole situation, including King Kaṁsa's enmity toward the Yadus and his attempt to murder Vasudeva.
Commentary

Madhava here indicates Akrura of the Madhu dynasty. Krsna asked him about the events in Mathura.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Akrūra, asked by the Lord in the previous two verses, then spoke to inform the Lord. The dative indicates that he described for the Lord, since the Lord desired to kill him. Another version has bhagavatā (asked by the Lord). Akrūra was born in the dynasty of Madhu and was thus allies with Kṛṣṇa. What did he describe? He described Kaṁsa’s continually animosity to the Yadus. The description continues in the next verse.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Asked by the Lord, Akrūra related in summary the many events in two verses. In the description he shows the present condition and does not hide the truth. He spoke this to the Lord who displays his unlimited qualities to the dedicated devotees. Akrūra was born in the dynasty of Madhu and was thus allies with Kṛṣṇa. Like the bee which takes the honey, Akrūra spoke a little here and there, which was the essence. Kaṁsa began to act inimical to the Yadus in general (anubandham) or acted constantly against them. He was eager to kill Vasudeva. He does not mention Kaṁsa’s name, since one should not utter anything inauspicious.

Akrūra describes the whole situation — Kaṁsa's enmity, the attempted murder of Vasudeva. Full disclosure to the Lord is part of mature devotion; the messenger doesn't soften the report to spare his audience.
Reflection Questions
  • Where do you soften reports to Kṛṣṇa to spare Him your full reality?
  • What would full honest disclosure of your week look like in prayer?

Like an ambassador who has waited for the formal cue, Akrūra now lays out the entire dossier — Kaṁsa's enmity, the attempt on Vasudeva's life, the order to bring the brothers. The narrative gear shifts from welcome to war-counsel.
