  • vibhuḥ — the almighty Lord
From vi + √bhū — all-pervading, mighty. The same epithet returns at v.39 for Balarāma. Gauḍīyas hold that vibhutva belongs strictly to Bhagavān; the jīva is aṇu, atomic. Akrūra holds onto this asymmetry as the basis for his refuge.
  • hasta — hand
Combined with paṅkajam — the lotus hand. Kṛṣṇa's hand on a devotee's head is the iconic Gauḍīya image of vara-pradāna, granting refuge. The hand recurs through Bhāgavata as the abhaya-hasta — the fearlessness-giving gesture.
  • abhayam — fearlessness
a- (not) + bhaya (fear). Bhāgavata's signature gift of bhakti — the elimination not of the world's threats but of the fear-response itself. Gauḍīyas read this as a consequence of śaraṇāgati's sixth limb: rakṣiṣyatīti viśvāsaḥ, faith that He will protect.
  • kāla — time
Kāla — time as eater. The same word at v.5 (the river of time), now restaged as a serpent. Gauḍīyas read kāla as Bhagavān's daṇḍa-rūpa — His rod-form for the conditioned soul; only the surrendered are exempt.
  • bhuja - aṅga — the serpent
Compound: bhuja (coil) + aṅga (limb, body) — "coil-bodied," a serpent. The image of time-as-serpent is Bhāgavata-wide; Gauḍīyas read it as the snake that bites the soul incrementally, hour by hour, until the lotus hand stops it.
  • śaraṇa — shelter, refuge
From √śri — to take refuge. The doctrinal heart of Gauḍīya theology: śaraṇāgati. Rūpa Gosvāmī lists six aṅgas of śaraṇa (BRS 1.2.235ff.); this verse condenses the whole posture into a fallen body and an outstretched hand.
  • eṣiṇām — those searching for
Genitive plural of eṣin — seeker, desirer. The participle that distinguishes the qualified candidate for śaraṇa: one must want shelter for the hand to be given. Gauḍīyas regard this desire itself as Bhagavān's first gift.
And when I have fallen at His feet, the almighty Lord will place His lotus hand upon my head. For those who seek shelter in Him because they are greatly disturbed by the powerful serpent of time, that hand removes all fear.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
And when I have fallen at His feet, the almighty Lord will place His lotus hand upon my head. For those who seek shelter in Him because they are greatly disturbed by the powerful serpent of time, that hand removes all fear.
Commentary

And (api) he will place (adasyat) his lotus hand, which gives fearlessness to all living entities, on my head.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Because of the appearance of strong bhakti, Akrūra is not satisfied with just offering respects. He desires the touch of the Lord’s hand. That is expressed in two verses. Api means “openly.” When I fall at the base of his feet, my master (vibhuḥ) will place his own lotus hand on my head. That hand is described. Though I will be successful if one of his dear friends puts his hand on my head, will he not place his own hand on my head? Time is a snake because it destroys all beings and acts quickly to accomplish its task without being seen. That hand destroys fear in people who desire protection and are afflicted by the pursuit of the snake of time. The possessive case expresses the dative case (that hand gives fearlessness to all people).

Jiva
When Akrūra falls at His feet, the almighty Lord will place His lotus hand on his head — the hand that removes all fear from those troubled by the serpent of time. Surrender invites a touch that does not happen any other way.
Reflection Questions
  • What fear of time and death do you carry that only Kṛṣṇa's hand can remove?
  • Are you positioned at His feet, or still seated trying to figure things out from a distance?

A child fleeing a snake throws himself at his father's knees, and the father's hand on his head is the whole world remade. The serpent of time is real; the hand is also real; the verse is the simplest description of śaraṇāgati Akrūra knows how to give.

Gajendra's last breath

Gajendra, the king of elephants, seized by the crocodile of saṁsāra in the lake, gave up self-effort, raised a single lotus, and called out. Bhagavān descended from Vaikuṇṭha mid-flight; His cakra severed the crocodile, and the elephant rose into the Lord's arms (SB 8.2–3).

Gauḍīyas read Akrūra's image of the kāla-serpent and the lotus hand as the same dramaturgy from the devotee's side: śaraṇāgati is the only act the soul can complete; the rescue belongs entirely to the Lord.
