  • nanu-kṛṣṇaḥ-aham — indeed I am Kṛṣṇa
The chapter's most-quoted half-line — 'verily, I am Kṛṣṇa!' Caitanya Mahāprabhu's biographers describe Him manifesting this exact mood at Purī. Gauḍīyas read it not as Advaitin aham-brahmāsmi but as the supreme symptom of viraha-āveśa, where bhāva temporarily speaks in the first person of the Beloved.
  • sva-bhujam-nyasya — placing her own arm (on a friend's shoulder)
Phrase: sva (own) + bhuja (arm) + nyasya (placing). The very gesture verse 27 will later read in Kṛṣṇa's footprints — His arm on Her shoulder. The gopī is re-enacting the gesture they will all soon mourn discovering.
  • gatim-lalitām — my graceful movements
Phrase: gati (gait) + lalita (graceful, charming). Lalita-tribhaṅga — the threefold-bent graceful pose — is Kṛṣṇa's iconographic standard. The gopī claims His tribhaṅga as her own walk; the parody is also an offering.
  • tat-manāḥ — with her mind fully absorbed in Him
Compound: tat (Him) + manas (mind). Bhagavad-gītā 9.34's mat-manā bhava precept lived out by the gopīs — but in a register of intoxication rather than yogic absorption. Same lakṣaṇa, higher rasa.
Another gopī, her mind fixed on Kṛṣṇa, walked about with her arm resting on the shoulder of a friend and declared, “I am Kṛṣṇa! Just see how gracefully I move!”
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Another gopī, her mind fixed on Kṛṣṇa, walked about with her arm resting on the shoulder of a friend and declared, "I am Kṛṣṇa! Just see how gracefully I move!"
Commentary

In imitating the pastimes of catching each other (cowherd boys), by the strength of the sancari bhava of unmada and the absorption in the pastimes, the gopis lost their own identity and attained a oneness with Krsna. This is described in four verses. "I am Krsna and go around with my arm on the shoulders of Subala. See my graceful actions."

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Gatiṁ refers to dance movements.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

One gopī said with certainty (nunam), “I am Kṛṣṇa.” You should not doubt this. Or O cowherds! Or O gopīs! (nunam) See my attractive movements or how I attractively walk. She was absorbed in Kṛṣṇa (tan-manāḥ). Thus there is no fault in saying this. “I am Kṛṣṇa, full of all qualities. See the gopī Lalitā, who has taken shelter of me (gatim).” Do you remember this? Kṛṣṇa had previously said this. Why is the statement not complete? Her mind was taken by Kṛṣṇa (tan-matāḥ). Or she was absorbed in the imitation.

Walking with an arm draped on a friend's shoulder, one gopī imitates Kṛṣṇa's casual grace. Even Kṛṣṇa's ordinary gestures are worth memorizing — divinity lives in His relaxed sweetness.
Reflection Questions
  • Which of Kṛṣṇa's small, casual qualities most attracts me?
  • How might I let one of His unhurried gestures shape my own day?

A novice actor, finally given the lead role, walks the village street announcing 'I am the king! Watch my gait!' — and the villagers, knowing the boy and seeing the king step out of him, applaud both at once. So the gopī, arm slung across her sister's shoulder, declares 'nanu kṛṣṇaḥ aham' — and the others believe her, because love has made it so.
