  • prasāditaḥ — satisfied, pleased
Past participle of pra-√sad — to settle into grace. Prasāda is the Lord's settled pleasure. Varuṇa's worship is not registered as ritual completion but as the Lord's prasāda — which is the only outcome bhakti pursues.
  • īśvara-īśvaraḥ — the Lord of all lords
Doubled īśvara. Cf. Brahma-saṁhitā 5.1, īśvaraḥ paramaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ. Varuṇa is an īśvara of his domain; Kṛṣṇa is īśvara-īśvara, the Lord above every lokapāla. Aiśvarya named at the very moment He is leaving a court to go home to His father.
  • ādāya — having taken
Absolutive of ā-√dā. The verb of Kṛṣṇa's gentle taking — the same verb-field used when a mother lifts a child. Aiśvarya does the lifting in vātsalya's tone.
  • sva-pitaram — His own father
Sva (own) + pitaram (father). Śukadeva insists on the possessive: Kṛṣṇa's own father. Gauḍīya tattva: Nanda's fatherhood is not contingent or borrowed; Kṛṣṇa's eternal vātsalya-relation makes him Bhagavān's father.
  • bandhūnām — of the relatives
Genitive plural. Vraja-bhaktas are Kṛṣṇa's bandhus — kinsmen — by eternal relation, not by social tie. The relatives' joy at Kṛṣṇa's return is the natural pulse of Vraja-rasa.
  • mudam — delight
From √mud. The native vocabulary of Vraja's emotional weather. The journey to Varuṇa's court ends in mud — bliss — restoring the chapter to the rasa it began in before the night-time slip.
Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: Thus satisfied by Lord Varuṇa, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord of lords, took His father and returned home, where their relatives were overjoyed to see them.

In this pastime, Lord Kṛṣṇa gives a sublime demonstration of His position as the Supreme Lord of all lords. Varuṇa, the demigod of the seas, is most powerful, yet he was happy to worship even Lord Kṛṣṇa’s father, what to speak of Kṛṣṇa Himself.

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: Thus satisfied by Lord Varuṇa, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord of lords, took His father and returned home, where their relatives were overjoyed to see them.
Commentary

He returned home with Nanda. It is understood that he returned before the sun had yet risen.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Satisfied by the methods described (evam), by treatment, words and actions, Kṛṣṇa returned. “Why was he satisfied with just that, for such a great offense?” Kṛṣṇa is omniscient (bhagavān), and knew that actually Varuṇa had not made offense. Why is Kṛṣṇa considered Bhagavān? He is the inspiration for all beings (akhilānām iśvaraḥ). Another version has īśvareśvaraḥ.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Satisfied by the methods described (evam), by treatment, words and actions, Kṛṣṇa returned. “Why was he satisfied with just that, for such a great offense?” Kṛṣṇa is omniscient (bhagavān), and knew that actually Varuṇa had not made offense. In fact he did it with a desire to see me. He considered also that his father had suffered and had fear. Why is Kṛṣṇa considered Bhagavān? He is the inspiration for all beings (akhilānām iśvaraḥ), or is the master internally and externally. Or though he is the Lord, he returned with his father. He showed special bhakti for his father. And since he is the father of Kṛṣṇa, he had no fear of suffering by his very nature. Taking his hand, he returned home. His friends, the people of Vraja, experienced continual rivers of happiness. The word ca indicates that Nanda also celebrated the breaking of the fast. The Lord was pleased. This indicates that compared to Indra’s offense, Varuṇa’s offense was little since he wanted to see the Lord and worship him. In relation to Indra it is not mentioned that the Lord was pleased. He was glorified (saṅkīrtitaḥ). Being pleased after someone commits a great offense is not possible. Thus Kṛṣṇa returned home pleased, because of Varuṇa’s bhakti.

Related verses
Satisfied with Varuṇa, Kṛṣṇa takes His father and returns home; relatives are overjoyed. Resolution of crisis is followed by simple homecoming — the dramatic encounter ends in a family reunion.
Reflection Questions
  • What recent resolution of mine deserved more celebration as a family reunion than I gave it?
  • Where am I storing 'rescue' as private experience instead of as community joy?

An ambassador, having pleased a vast court, simply lifts his elderly father onto the chariot and drives home — and the household waiting at the door does not first ask what was said, but only that he is back. Bhagavān returns to Vraja with Nanda as the cargo, and Vraja's whole grammar reasserts itself: He is the son, the relatives are overjoyed, and the journey to Varuṇa's court becomes one more story for the courtyard.
