  • bhagavatā — by the Supreme Personality of Godhead
Instrumental of Bhagavān — the full Person with all six opulences. The Bhāgavatam interrupts the narrative voice to remind us: the boy calling these cows is svayaṁ bhagavān (SB 1.3.28). Vraja's intimacy never cancels His full Godhood.
  • megha-gambhīrayā — as deep as a cloud
Compound: megha (cloud) + gambhīra (deep, grave). Kṛṣṇa's voice carries cloud-depth — and Vraja's whole iconography of Him as the dark cloud of mercy (śyāma-megha-varṇa) is in that adjective. The sound itself is rain to the parched cows.
  • sva-nāmnām — of their own names
Compound: sva (own) + nāmnām (genitive plural of nāman). He knows each cow by her name. Gauḍīyas amplify: the Lord knows every jīva personally; nāma is the means by which that personal knowing flows in both directions.
  • pratineduḥ — they replied, they called back
Perfect of prati + √nad — to sound in reply. Kīrtana is a prati-nāda, an answering sound. The cows' reply is the Bhāgavatam's prototype for the devotee's answering chant.
  • praharṣitāḥ — greatly enlivened
From pra + √hṛṣ. The bodily thrill (harṣa, romāñca) that Rūpa Gosvāmī classifies among the sāttvika-bhāvas. Even the cows of Vraja exhibit the symptoms of bhāva when Kṛṣṇa speaks their names.
The Supreme Personality of Godhead called out to the animals in a voice that resounded like a rumbling cloud. Hearing the sound of their own names, the cows were overjoyed and called out to the Lord in reply.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
The Supreme Personality of Godhead called out to the animals in a voice that resounded like a rumbling cloud. Hearing the sound of their own names, the cows were overjoyed and called out to the Lord in reply.
Commentary

This verse describes how Krsna rescued the cows. Seeing each one, he called out their names and they answered by mooing.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

What happened when they found the cows is described. The crest jewel of cowherds called the cows to satisfy the cows and the cowherd boys. He called with a voice like rumbling of clouds which was very deep (gambhīrayā). The word gambhīra describes primarily a deep hole in the ground. By analogy, it indicates the deep water in that deep hole, from which the sound rising is deep in tone. The sound of the clouds is similarly deep. The voice of the Lord was similar in tone. He called the cows’ individual names in that deep voice, with a sweet tone (ninadam). Hearing that, the cows were blissfully and made sounds in reply.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

What happened when they found the cows is described. The crest jewel of cowherds called the cows to satisfy the cows and the cowherd boys. He called the cows by their names. Hearing the chanting (ninadam) of their names, the cows were overjoyed (praharṣitāḥ).

Kṛṣṇa calls each cow by name in a cloud-rumbling voice; hearing their names they cry back in joy. The Lord knows each personally — He does not herd; He summons each by who they are.
Reflection Questions
  • When did I last feel the Lord call me by my actual name rather than as a category?
  • Whom in my care could I summon by name today instead of by role?

Kṛṣṇa calls each cow by name in a voice like a thunder-cloud, and the cows — overjoyed at hearing themselves named — call back. This is the Vraja signature of nāma: the Lord knows His own by name, and the moment His voice falls on them they answer. Every kīrtana is the same exchange, scaled to the human throat.

Haridāsa Ṭhākura and the power of the name

Haridāsa Ṭhākura, the nāmācārya, used to say that the holy name and the named One are non-different — that hearing Kṛṣṇa's name is hearing Kṛṣṇa Himself call.

The cows of Vraja, on hearing their own names from Kṛṣṇa's mouth, reply in joy. Caitanya tradition reads the verse in reverse: when we chant His names, He, like the cows, is overjoyed and replies — the sound is mutual.
