  • muñjā-aṭavyām — in the Muñjā forest
Compound: muñjā (a type of reed grass, sharp) + aṭavī (forest). A specific stage in Vraja's sacred geography — the same region the boys had earlier crossed in the Pralambāsura episode (SB 10.18); the līlā keeps returning to its proper grounds.
  • bhraṣṭa-mārgam — who had lost their way
Compound: bhraṣṭa (fallen-off) + mārga (path). Used for the cows here, but the term resonates with every Bhāgavatam reference to the lost soul (cf. SB 11.5.4 on bhraṣṭa-mārgāḥ). The Lord's friends are sent to retrieve them.
  • go-dhanam — wealth in the form of cows
Compound: go (cow) + dhana (wealth). Vraja's true currency. Gauḍīyas note: Kṛṣṇa Himself takes the title Go-vinda — pleaser of cows — because their well-being is the standing test of His sevā-relationship with Vraja.
  • sannyavartayan — they turned them all back
Causative of sam + ni + √vṛt — caused them to fully turn back. Nivṛtti — turning back from material entanglement — is the verb's underlying force; the boys re-enact, on the surface of līlā, the inner turning every sādhaka must learn.
Within the Muñjā forest the cowherd boys finally found their valuable cows, who had lost their way and were crying. Then the boys, thirsty and tired, herded the cows onto the path back home.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Within the Muñjā forest the cowherd boys finally found their valuable cows, who had lost their way and were crying. Then the boys, thirsty and tired, herded the cows onto the path back home.
Commentary

Finding the lost, crying cows and other animals in the reed thicket, they brought them out.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

They obtained the cows, with all experiencing the highest auspiciousness (sam—prāpya). They returned all together (sam-- nyavartayan). Because of wandering all about, they became thirsty and tired.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

They attained with all auspiciousness all the cows at once (sam-prāpya) from the thicket and brought them back quickly in one group to the path (san-nyavaratayan) because the boys were thirsty and tired from wandering about.

Jiva
In the Muñjā forest the boys find the lost cows crying, and lead them tired and thirsty toward home. Lost things, when found, do not arrive triumphant — they arrive tired and need to be brought home gently.
Reflection Questions
  • What recently recovered relationship or commitment needs a slow, tired walk back rather than a victory parade?
  • Where am I rushing the homeward leg of a recovery?

The Muñjā forest is where the cows are finally found — lost, crying, recovered. The Gauḍīya reading is plain: every soul that wanders into the canes and reeds of saṁsāra is sought out, named, and turned homeward by the boys of Vraja under Kṛṣṇa's gaze. The path back is the path the cows know — toward the village where Yaśodā waits.
