Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.16.59
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
sarva - jñaḥ
—
all-knowing
Compound: sarva (all) + jña (knower). Bhagavān as the One who knows every soul's case. Cf. Gītā 7.26's tracking of every being. Kāliya hands over the verdict to His omniscience.
-
jagat - īśvaraḥ
—
the Lord of the universe
Compound: jagat (universe) + īśvara (Lord). The relational title — Bhagavān's lordship over the cosmos qualifies Him to dispose of one creature within it.
-
anugraham - nigraham - vā - manyase
—
whether You consider mercy or punishment
Phrase: anugraha (mercy) + nigraha (punishment) + vā (or) + manyase (You consider). The two are equal in Kāliya's view now — verse 34's theology has been internalized by its target. Either outcome from Bhagavān is welcome.
"You are the cause of giving up maya (tatra). Therefore, as you wish, you may be merciful or unmerciful to me."
Since I cannot give up this nature on my own, you should do something. By you alone, this evil nature of mine can be given up. Do as you wish (manyase). You know the power of your māyā and my miserable position (sarva-jñāh). You should give mercy because you are the supreme independent (jagad-īśvaraḥ). And thus you can also punish me. yathāhaṁ bhavatā sṛṣṭo jātyā rūpeṇa ceśvara svabhāvena ca sādhutvaṁ tathedaṁ ceṣṭitaṁ mayā Since I have been created in this species with a form by you, I act correctly by my nature. Viṣṇu Purāṇa 5.7.73 Or, you know the causes of mercy and punishment (sarvajñāh). Do one of these since you are Lord of the world (jagat-īśvaraḥ) and because you are the Lord, even in punishing you can give mercy.

Viṣṇu Purāṇa 5.7.73 Or you alone are the cause of this great offense. Offense is not clearly defined by shame or fear. You know everything since you are omniscient (sarva-jñaḥ). What more can be said? You alone know everything. You have the ability to punish the deserving (jagad-īśvaraḥ). Do whatever you desire to do (yad manyase). Or if you think of doing something else, do that to us. What is the use of our desiring anything?
- Am I praying with mercy or punishment held equally as His option, or only asking for the easier one?
- What current choice could I genuinely hand over with this kind of openness?
You are the cause of the removal of illusion, since You are the all-knowing Lord. Arrange whatever You think proper — mercy or punishment — for us. Kāliya's third speech reaches the highest rung: not asking for one outcome over another, but trusting the assignment. This is anukūlya without preference.
