Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.12.4
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
guñjā
—
small red-and-black berries used as ornaments
Guñjā berries are an iconic Vraja ornament — Kṛṣṇa Himself wears a guñjā-mālā in many Gauḍīya dhyāna verses (Rūpa Gosvāmī, Stava-mālā). Forest decoration is more dear to Kṛṣṇa than palace gold.
-
piccha
—
peacock feathers
The piccha-mauli, peacock-feather crown, is Kṛṣṇa's signature ornament — Gauḍīya iconography fixes this in every mūrti. Here His friends share the look; Vraja-sakhas dress like their Lord.
-
dhātubhiḥ
—
with mineral colors from the forest
Coloured earth pigments — gairika, etc. — used as tilaka and body-paint. The forest itself supplies the paint; the dhātu is what Vraja's hills offer freely to its children.
-
bhūṣitāḥ
—
decorated
From bhūṣ- (to adorn). Used here in passive — they were already adorned by their mothers. Vātsalya labors at the start of every day; the boys then add a sakhya-layer on top.
Though the boys were ornamented by their mothers with crystal and gunja seed beads, when they went to the forest they ornamented themselves with forest fruits and flowers.
Seven verses describe the playing of the young boys. Stavaka means flower clusters and sumanaḥ means flowers. Ornaments made of crystal were attractive to the boys because they could not be distinguished from valuable gems. The boys took guñja berries growing in Vṛndāvana out of curiosity and their mothers strung them into necklaces. Sometimes mukta (pearl) is seen instead of guñja.

- What ornaments have I been given by my spiritual family that I have forgotten to wear?
- What simple, natural beauty in my day could I 'pick up' and offer in seva instead of leaving it as background?
Picture children at a wedding wearing the jewelry their mothers fastened on them at dawn — and then, on the road, picking up wildflowers and pinning them on top, until the wildflowers nearly outshine the gold. Vraja's love decorates twice: once at home with kāca and gold, again in the forest with leaves and minerals.
