Hariścandra had no son and was therefore extremely morose. Once, therefore, following the advice of Nārada, he took shelter of Varuṇa and said to him, “My lord, I have no son. Would you kindly give me one?”
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Hariścandra had no son and was therefore extremely morose. Once, therefore, following the advice of Nārada, he took shelter of Varuṇa and said to him "My lord! Please give me a son." Saḥ refers to Hariścandra.
Hariścandra, despite all his greatness, was made miserable by childlessness. Even the highest worldly position cannot heal an empty corner of the heart — and seeking shelter is the right response.
Reflection Questions
  • What empty corner of my heart am I still trying to fill by worldly success rather than by surrender?
  • Whom or what have I taken shelter of when faced with what I cannot fix?
