The serpent brothers of Narmadā gave Narmadā to Purukutsa. Being sent by Vāsuki, she took Purukutsa to the lower region of the universe.
Purport
Before describing the descendants of Purukutsa, the son of Māndhātā, Śukadeva Gosvāmī first describes how Purukutsa was married to Narmadā, who was induced to take him to the lower region of the universe.

Translation
The serpent brothers of Narmadā gave their sister Narmadā to Purukutsa. [Note: Māndhātā had three sons, Purukutsa, Ambarīṣa and Mucukunda.] Being urged by Vāsuki, she took Purukutsa to the lower region of the universe.
In speaking of the dynasty of Purukutsa, first his marriage is described. The snakes gave her to Purukutsa in marriage. She brought him to Rasātala.
Personal Guidance
Marriages and alliances sometimes carry souls into unexpected regions — Purukutsa is taken down to Rasātala by his serpent-bride. The partners we accept can become the path by which we are conveyed to places we never planned.
Reflection Questions
- What 'region' of life — career, culture, family — have I been carried into through a relationship I once chose lightly?
- How conscious am I about the trajectories my close associations are pulling me toward?
