Thereafter, when the child was born, Varuṇa approached Hariścandra and said, “Now you have a son. With this son you can offer me a sacrifice.” In answer to this, Hariścandra said, “After ten days have passed since an animal’s birth, the animal becomes fit to be sacrificed.”

Translation
Thereafter, Varuṇa said, “A son has been born. With this son you can offer me a sacrifice." In answer to this, Hariścandra said, "After ten days have passed since an animal's birth, the animal becomes fit to be sacrificed."
Varuṇa spoke. Out of affection for his son, Hariścandra then spoke in order to cheat Varuṇa. “After ten days an animal becomes pure.”
Personal Guidance
When Varuṇa comes to collect, Hariścandra immediately invents a delay. The human heart finds endlessly creative pretexts to postpone the payment of what we promised God.
Reflection Questions
- What spiritual commitment am I postponing with a perfectly reasonable-sounding excuse?
- What 'ten days' have stretched into ten years in my own delays before the Lord?
