When Durvāsā touched his lotus feet, Mahārāja Ambarīṣa was very much ashamed, and when he saw Durvāsā attempting to offer prayers, because of mercy he was aggrieved even more. Thus he immediately began offering prayers to the great weapon of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Seeing Durvāsā attempting to praise him, Mahārāja Ambarīṣa was ashamed and, seeing him suffering, was greatly aggrieved. Thus he offered prayers to the weapon of the Lord. Seeing his attempts at praising, Ambarīṣa was embarrassed.
A devotee feels embarrassed, not victorious, when a great soul falls at his feet. Ambarīṣa's first response to his persecutor's suffering is to pray for him — that compassionate reflex is the signature of a pure heart.
Reflection Questions
  • When someone who wronged me suffers the consequences, do I feel quiet satisfaction or genuine concern?
  • Where in my life is my ego still hoping to receive apologies and praise from those who have hurt me?
