Because Kuntī feared people’s criticisms, with great difficulty she had to give up her affection for her child. Unwillingly, she packed the child in a basket and let it float down the waters of the river. O Mahārāja Parīkṣit, your great-grandfather the pious and chivalrous King Pāṇḍu later married Kuntī.

Translation
Fearing people's criticisms, with great difficulty she gave up her child by placing it in a basket in the river. Your great-grandfather the pious and chivalrous King Pāṇḍu later married Kuntī.
Personal Guidance
Fearing public criticism, Kuntī floats Karṇa down the river. Public opinion can drive even great souls to abandon their own children — and the abandonment then unfolds into all of Mahābhārata's tragedy.
Reflection Questions
- What 'public opinion' am I letting drive an abandonment I will later regret?
- Whose child — biological or symbolic — am I being asked to keep rather than float away?
